A Florida man burned to death after being trapped in a sauna, his family says.
On Sunday, 68-year-old South Florida man Dennis Antiporek left a note telling his family he was going to the sauna. After hours passed and Antipork didn't return, his worried daughter went to look for him, CBS Miami reports.
That's when she made a gruesome discovery.
Lara Antiporek told the station her father's body had been charred black. The deceased's wife, 49-year-old Ronnie Antiporek, said she can't get the image out of her mind.
“I close my eyes and I just see his face charred,” Ronnie Antiporek told CBS Miami. “And this sounds horrible, but there was skin on the floor and on the bench and we shouldn’t have had to see that.”
An attorney for the family, Joseph Madalon, told the New York Daily News that the family plans to sue the condominium association and the company that maintains the sauna. The family believes the timer in the sauna malfunctioned, never shutting off the heat.
"He was totally broiled," Madalon told the publication. "His skin had fallen off his body. There were huge chunks of skin on the sauna floor. He literally looked like jerky."
A medical examiner's office received the man's body Wednesday to ultimately determine his cause of death.
Madalon told the NYDN he wants the examiner's office to determine whether or not the high temperatures caused a heart attack or stroke, which would have prevented him from leaving the sauna.
