New York Police Recover Body Of Max Maisel, ESPN Writer's Missing Son

The Rochester Police Department has confirmed that a body found Friday in Lake Ontario is Max Maisel, the son of ESPN writer Ivan Maisel. Max Maisel disappeared nearly two months ago.

"[This is] merely the postscript to our sad story," Ivan Maisel, a well-known sports writer, and his wife, Meg Murray, said in a statement. "We have mourned Max from the night that the Rochester police called to tell us he was missing. There was no other plausible solution to the puzzle he left behind."

According to WKRG, a fisherman located Max Maisel's body in the lake Friday night, roughly 200 yards east of where he disappeared.

An autopsy is pending, and the cause of death may not be known for several days, authorities said Monday. Foul play is not suspected. No other information about the investigation has been released.

Maisel, 21, was last seen alive on Feb. 22 at the upstate New York campus of Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a third-year photography student. His cell phone, house keys and other personal belongings were found inside his apartment, according to his family.

The following day, Max's car was found. The vehicle, a bronze 2004 Acura SUV, was parked near Charlotte Pier at the mouth of the Genesee River, authorities said.

The Rochester Police Department conducted multiple searches of the waters around Charlotte Pier, but were unable to locate the young man.

"We have our memories of a sweet boy who grew into a sensitive, caring young man," the family said. "We miss him [and] that will not go away."
