It's only her first year on the job, but a Connecticut high school teacher's career might already be over.
Kayla Mooney, 24, teaches science at Danbury High School in southwestern Connecticut. She turned herself in to Danbury police on Tuesday. Cops began their investigation seven weeks ago after receiving a tip that Mooney had been sexually involved with a male student.
She was placed on paid administrative leave in February while detectives looked into the case. Cops say Mooney allegedly had sex with the student late last year, and provided him with alcohol. Few details about the alleged encounter have been released, but officials said it didn't occur at the school.
"We are all very disappointed that this has happened to one of our faculty members," Danbury school superintendent Sal Pascarella told the News Times.
Police said the criminal investigation is ongoing. Mooney is charged with second degree sexual assault, and providing alcohol to a minor.
She's the third teacher in southwestern Connecticut to face criminal charges over alleged sexual misconduct since February.
Mooney was released without bail and is scheduled to appear in court April 14.
