Local leaders hold press conference to address crime in the city, new initiatives - WOAI

Launched in January of this year, the Violent Crime Task Force Initiative deploys covert police units working with the Sheriff's department, the District Attorney's office, and federal agents.

Local leaders will be addressed crime in the city and the Violent Crime Task Force Initiative in a press conference held at the Public Safety Headquarters at 4 p.m.

Those in attendance included Chief William McManus, Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, Mayor Ivy Taylor.

McManus mentioned the increase in crime across the nation, especially in San Antonio.

In hopes of making a drastic change, the Violent Crime Task Force Initiative was launched in January of this year. All covert police units were reassigned to tackle a new mission: violent crime.

McManus said the initiative has resulted in more than 950 arrests, more than 150 weapons seized, more than 62,000 grams of drugs, and nearly $230,000 in cash has been seized thus far.

"We no longer are targeting areas, we are targeting individuals so we will follow these individuals wherever they go and I think the results show that," said LaHood. "Our role is to assist the task force in preventing these individuals from re-victimizing our community again."

LaHood and McManus stressed that the city still remains among the safest major cities in the nation and that there is no specific reason to the crime increase.
