WAYNESBORO, Tenn. – Wayne County Sheriff Ric Wilson was happy Friday after members of his department and Waynesboro Police Department arrested 17 people as a part of undercover drug investigation.
“We had 21 indictments; we’ve gotten 17 in custody now. That’s not a bad average,” Wilson said. “We’ll pick the other four up sooner or later.
Wilson labeled the investigation “Back At It.”
“I wanted these people who are bringing in this meth and other drugs, and selling these prescription pills, that we are out there and we’re working just as hard as ever to get them off the streets and in prison,” the sheriff said.
He said most of the indictments stem from the sale of crystal methamphetamine.
“It’s ICE," Wilson said. "It’s not your hillbilly meth that is made in a bathroom or a shed somewhere.”
He said 16 cases were made on meth sales or possession, and 11 involved the sale of prescription pills.
“Pills have been a problem for years; they are still a problem,” the sheriff said.
Wilson said two people, who worked at SouthGate Deli on Tennessee 13 near the Alabama state line, were arrested after authorities discovered they were selling “meth pipes,” synthetic drugs and promoting gambling.
“We found illegal poker machines inside the store, along with receipts where they had been making payouts,” the sheriff said. “Overall, it was a good operation, and we’re ready to start on the next one.”
