Police arrested a man Thursday morning in a Northwest Side subdivision who they say was driving in circles at an intersection near an active crime scene, and then continued into oncoming traffic.

Officers were initially responding to a stolen vehicle at a Valero near Timberhill and Wurzbach. While investigating the vehicle around 9:30, the suspect drove into the intersection and started driving in circles.

"He did like five or six doughnuts. We weren't even looking at him," said Sgt. Michael Ross.

The suspect then began driving into oncoming traffic on Timberhill, narrowly missing other drivers, Ross said. At that point, police initiated a brief chase.

He eventually pulled into a cul-de-sac at Tumbling Water and Split Creek and police boxed him in.

Police were able to remove him from the vehicle, a Honda Accord, and arrest him. Ross said the suspect might have been suffering from a mental health issue at the time of the incident.

A woman who knew the suspect, but declined to be identify herself, said the suspect had visited her that morning to show her the Accord, which his mother had recently purchased.

The car, which had paper license plates, was impounded, and the suspect was transported to jail.
