Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a spate of car break-ins in Newton Abbot. In the past 28 days, there have been at least 50 recorded incidents of thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles in the town.

The incidents have happened all over the town, and police have said that the offenders appear to be targeting any vehicle with items on display, not just high value items.

Two men, both from Newton Abbot, have been arrested in connection with the car crime offences and have appeared in front of magistrates in Plymouth.

A police spokesman said: "Darren Breen, 25, from Newton Abbot, has been charged with theft from a motor vehicle.

"He was due to appear before Plymouth Magistrates' Court on Monday."

A second man in his 30s was arrested in connection with the offences on Friday and appeared in front of magistrates on Saturday.

Both men had been charged in relation to the run of thefts and attempted thefts from vehicles.

"Several operations, in and out of uniform across all shifts have also been carried out to apprehend the offenders. Our scenes of crime department have attended numerous reports to explore every opportunity for evidence. CCTV and recovered stolen property is also being examined to further enquiries.

Inquiries into the crimes are continuing after a further five incidents were reported to the town's policing team over the weekend, but Newton Abbot police chief Adrian Woon said that the investigations were still active and repeated calls for residents to be vigilant and not to leave any items on display in their vehicles.

He said: "The issue is ongoing and there have been cases of thefts and attempted thefts. The incidents are generally happening with vehicles on the driveway or on pavements on the side of roads.

"It is happening all across Newton Abbot with no one area being targeted in particular and has been going on for a while.

"These do not appear to be cases where people are targeting cars with overtly expensive things in them or with high value items. It appears to be cases where they see anything in a vehicle that they can get their hands on, even things like loose change."

He said that in the Newton Abbot sector area there have been at least 40 instances in the last 28 days of incidents recorded as a theft or attempted theft from a vehicle, but added the number of offenders could be higher as soon offences would have been recorded as criminal damage.

Insp Woon said that vehicles were being targeted in several different ways, with some having had their windows smashed with a rock, some vehicles being left insecure, and some with door frames being broken and bent.

He said: "The message for us is around vigilance, as that is the key for us. We are asking anyone to report any kind of suspicious behaviour around vehicles in the area and are reminding people not to leave items on show in your vehicles. The best way for owners to prevent this happening is by not leaving any items on show, workmen not leaving tools in vans and making sure vehicles are locked."

He said that the patrols that he commands will have an extra focus on trying to identify these offenders.

But Insp Woon said: "We don't believe that it is a single individual doing this and we believe that there could be three or four potential offenders, but we have no reason to believe that all the offences are linked."

He appealed: "If you see anything suspicious then call 101 and mention the Newton Abbot vehicle theft series of crimes, or if you have been affected and haven't told us, then report it to us, so we can build up a bigger picture of what is taking place."

A spokesman for Newton Abbot police said: "We would like to acknowledge the concerns raised, and assure the public we have increased patrols in the areas affected.

"Several operations, in and out of uniform across all shifts have also been carried out to apprehend the offenders. Our scenes of crime department have attended numerous reports to explore every opportunity for evidence. CCTV and recovered stolen property is also being examined to further enquiries.

"We endeavour to keep the public informed wherever possible but must ensure this does not jeopardise any ongoing investigation or breach the data protection act. Updates will be posted as and when available.

"We thank you for your support and patience at this time."
