Idaho man, 85, says sex crime involving 4-year-old girl 'was not done for pleasure' - New York Daily News

An 85-year-old man accused of lewd conduct with a 4-year-old claimed his inappropriate interaction with the young girl was “not done for pleasure.”

Police arrested Charles Cecil Carroll on the felony charge in April, but he recently defended himself, sharing his side of the story in an interview with East Idaho News.

“Her mother lived in the same apartment complex I did, and I used to see them regularly,” he explained. “She used to come over when she was pregnant. When the baby was born, I went to the hospital to visit, and I held that little girl when she was less than an hour old. I loved her as if she were my own.”

The girl and her mother were spending time in his home the day the alleged crime unfolded, according to the newspaper. Carroll said he was wearing a robe and smoking a cigarette in the dining room at the time.

“My robe had become partially open and I didn’t correct,” he said. “She walked over and out of curiosity, I’d say, started handling my genitals.”

It went on for about “three or four minutes” before the mother returned to the room, grabbed her daughter and left. She reported the incident to the police the same day and Carroll was arrested.

He was booked into the Bonneville County Jail on $50,000 bond. During his initial court appearance, a judge ordered his release and issued a three-year no-contact order barring him from interacting with the woman and her daughter.

A little over a month later, Carroll was charged with violating that order. He told the news outlet he’d taken out a loan for the woman's car and learned that she’d missed two payments on the vehicle.

Carroll said he drove by to see if the car was still there — the woman apparently saw him and then turned him in.

He pleaded guilty to violating the no-contact order and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 180 days suspended, East Idaho News reported.

When asked why he didn’t stop the young girl, he said he did not “have a good answer,” though he vehemently disputes investigators’ claims that he allowed the girl to touch him for sexual reasons.

“That is an out-and-out lie,” Carroll said. “It absolutely had nothing to do with sexual pleasure on my part.”
