TAMPA — The Tampa Police Department has launched a partnership with local businesses, schools and community groups to provide a sanctuary for victims of hate crimes and bullying.
As part of the police Safe Place program, participating businesses place colorful decals on a front door or window to signal that hate crime victims can seek shelter there and call 911 to report the crime.
"Anyone who seeks protection at the safe place locations can be assured that if they are the victim of a hate crime, police will promptly be called," Officer William Mechler said in a video posted Monday on the department's Facebook page.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines a hate crime as a "criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity."
Tampa police officers train employees for how to respond if a victim seeks help, Mechler said. The program is modeled after similar efforts in Orlando and Seattle, said Tampa police spokesman Eddy Durkin.
The department timed the announcement to coincide with the one year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, where gunman Omar Mateen targeted fatally shot 49 people.
"We pride ourselves as a city of inclusion and acceptance," Detective Robin Polk said in the video. "We are committed to the safety of all residents and visitors, and tackling crimes that target specific demographics that are at a higher risk to be victimized. Calling 911 and waiting for police to respond is essential for holding suspects accountable and reducing hate crimes and harassment in general."
Raid Salman, owner of the Taste of Jerusalem deli on East Busch Boulevard, said he didn't hesitate when Tampa police officers approached him about a program aimed at helping victims in their time of need.
"We need to support those people," Salman said. "I was ready without thinking twice."
