DANBURY - Major crime is down 14 percent for the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year, the city’s police department said.

Unofficial numbers show a drop in crime from January through May in eight major categories - murder, forcible rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

For the first five months of this year there were 425 total major crimes, compared to 493 major crimes for the same period in 2016.

For the month of May crime was down 26 percent, compared to May 2016.

The numbers back up Danbury’s reputation as one of the safest cities in the state.
