Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, condemned news that at least nine have died in a human-trafficking incident after they were found in a tractor-trailer outside of a Walmart in San Antonio, labeling it "sickening."
Overall, there were about 30 others who suffered various injuries along with nine deaths, including 20 individuals who were in critical or serious condition after dealing with 100+ degree temperatures in the tractor-trailer that did not have air conditioning. All of the individuals were taken to area hospitals.
"The human trafficking tragedy in my hometown is sickening and demonstrates kingping smugglers' blatant disregard for human life," Hurd said in a statement "My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those put in this horrific situation.
"It's never been more critical to effectively combat this multi-billion industry, led by any number of the 18 criminal organizations operating south of the border," Hurd said. "It also underlines the urgent need for a Smart Wall on our southern border that utilizes radar, technology and surveillance tools to detect illegal entrants and track them until border patrol agents can arrive."
Police are calling the incident a "horrific tragedy."
Police Chief William McManus said Sunday police were first made aware of the incident after a Walmart employee reported late Saturday or early Sunday that someone from the truck approached him asking for some water.
The employee gave them water, then called police, who found eight dead at the scene and the others suffering from dehydration and heat stroke. One other individual died later on.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, whose name has not been released, is being held.
