Anti-crime initiative underway again in Yonkers after violence - News 12 Westchester

YONKERS -

An anti-crime initiative is underway once again in Yonkers after a string of violence in the area.

Mayor Mike Spano was among those who kicked Operation Clean Sweep off again at the corner of Cliff and Spruce in the city’s Nodine Hill area on Wednesday. That’s where a mobile command unit will be parked for the next few days in an attempt to curb violence.

The police department will also increase patrols in the heart of neighborhoods that are often hit by crime.

A retrofitted van that goes up about 30 feet in the air with a military camera that can see for miles will also be used during the initiative.

On Monday, a man was stabbed near Riverdale Avenue and Downing Street just before 11 p.m. Just hours before that, police were searching for a gunman who shot someone near Locust Hill and Ashburton Avenue.

Officials say that overall crime is down. They also say these particular incidents aren’t random and are part of an ongoing dispute between two groups.
