ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis man on Friday admitted a role in a drug robbery just north of downtown that resulted in the shooting death of a Centralia man in 2012.
Malcolm “Lil’ Mac” Johnson, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, resulting in murder, as part of a plea deal that will likely result in 10 1/2 years in prison.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Bird said in court that Johnson, co-defendant Jessie “Lil’ Jessie” Hampton, 26, of St. Louis, and Kevin "Jeezy" Granderson, 34, were all involved in the robbery of three other men.
After a series of phone calls, meetings and negotiations, the three met Scipio A. Vaughn, 33, and two other men just after midnight on July 15, 2012, in the 1200 block of North 15th Street. Vaughn and one of the men had agreed to buy 27 ounces of cocaine for about $27,000, Bird said, but the real plan was to steal the money.
Johnson, Hampton and Granderson were all armed, and Hampton shot Vaughn twice in the back when he tried to run away, Bird said. Vaughn was killed. Johnson was behind the wheel of a car but held his gun on one of Vaughn's associates, Bird said.
The men then changed clothes in University City, split up the stolen money and spent a substantial amount at a Brooklyn strip club, the Pink Slip, Bird said.
Granderson pleaded guilty to a cocaine charge and a gun charge in connection with Vaughn's death and was sentenced in July 2016 to 21 years, 10 months in prison.
Hampton has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors were seeking to introduce evidence into Hampton and Johnson's case that they say proves that Hampton fatally shot Ralph Hill, 26, of the 3900 block of Compton Avenue on July 12, 2010 in the St. Louis Place Neighborhood. Hill slapped Hampton at a Metro East club, prosecutors said, and then Hampton followed him home. But U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber said that the prejudice of introducing that evidence at trial would outweigh its value in proving that Hampton and Johnson had a close, trusting relationship because of their prior crimes.
