Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency found that violent crimes increased in Alabama by 13 percent in 2016, according to their latest comprehensive release of statistics for the Uniform Crime Reporting program.
There were 25,188 violent crimes reported, with charges eventually being filed in about 40 percent of them.
Broken down, homicides increased by 12 percent, robberies increased by one percent, assaults increased by 19 percent, arson increased by 17 percent and rapes decreased by 6 percent.
Homicides rates in Alabama have been steadily rising in Alabama since 2014, after plunging in 2013. Robbery rates have remained fairly stable. Larceny, burglary, and rape are trending down overall over the last few years.
There was about a two percent increase in overall crime in Alabama for 2016, with 165,505 crimes reported throughout the state, or an average of 453 per day.
The most common crime was larceny, which made up nearly 60 percent of all crimes reported. Next was burglary, aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, robbery, rape, and then finally homicide.
Items stolen from Alabamians in 2016 totaled more than $257 million, most of it in the form of motor vehicles. Less than $43 million worth was ever recovered.
