TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Florida State University has the highest number of violent crimes out of all the state's public universities, according to the FBI's 2016 crime report.
The report says FSU has the highest number of violent crimes with a total of 20.
"I was very shocked. I had no idea that it was that bad," said FSU student Katie Norflus. "You hear about guns and stuff like that all the time. But, I never thought that it would be the highest. I've never felt unsafe."
Second highest is Florida International University with 15. FAMU had six.
The crime report says FSU also leads in the number of rapes (10), property crimes (523), larceny/thefts (452), and car thefts (33).
Florida State is second among public universities in robbery (six), aggravated assault (four), and burglary (38).
FSU student Dari Weissman said, "I have a stun gun. I actually got that for Christmas. You just have to be careful, especially at night and going out to parties and bars and stuff like that."
Major Jim Russell with the FSU Police Department says the 2016 crime rate is not the highest they've seen at FSU.
"We're very proactive," said Maj. Russell. "A lot of people see the officers out here patrolling on ATVs and bicycles and cars. There's our community policing program we call the Adopt-a-Cop program. We also do things called crime suppression details. We have officers undercover at times. They're out there looking for people setting up a robbery or people that are up to no good."
Maj. Russell says the numbers could be even higher for 2017. He says some people may be scared or embarrassed to report a crime.
FSUPD urges anyone who could be the victim of any crime to report to law enforcement immediately.
