Neighbor returns home to find nearby crime scene tape; teen in serious condition after shooting - GoDanRiver.com

Cherie Tamson had just spent a pleasant Friday night out in the River District only to come home to see crime scene tape around a nearby residence on South Woodberry Avenue.

A 15-year-old boy had been shot in the chest in the 500 block. He was taken to SOVAH Health-Danville before being transported to a hospital in Roanoke, according to a news release from the Danville Police Department.

“Another shooting, especially of a teen, is very concerning,” Tamson said during an interview outside her and her husband’s home Saturday morning.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, officers were first called to SOVAH Health-Danville after a gunshot victim was taken to the hospital by private vehicle, according to the news release. Authorities later determined the shooting occurred on South Woodberry Avenue in the northern part of the city.

Danville Police Department Capt. J.W. Jones told the Register & Bee the teen was in serious but stable condition Saturday. The investigation is ongoing, with investigators talking to potential witnesses, he said.

Jones did not offer any more details.

Tamson came home around 10:45 p.m. Friday after dining with friends at Me’s Burgers & Brews and enjoying live music at 2 Witches Winery & Brewing Co.

“Had a great time in Danville enjoying a nice fall evening,” Tamson said. “But it puts a damper on a nice evening when you come home to yellow crime scene tape around a house on your block.”

Danville continues to struggle with violent crime. There have been 12 homicides so far this year, including two within a 12-hour time period last month. There were a record 16 homicides last year in the city.

“I would like to move,” Tamson said. “But this house has been in my husband’s family for 40 years.”

However, South Woodberry Avenue is “such a nice residential neighborhood,” she said.

“I like my neighbors,” she said. “They’re good, decent people.”

Teen violence “is a serious issue that I have few answers for,” she said, adding that teens and children cannot advocate for themselves.

“I would like to see the community unite around the issue of teen violence, explore some ideas, propose some solutions and work with city officials to implement them,” she said.

Anyone with information about Friday night’s incident is encouraged to contact Danville Crime Stoppers at (434) 799-6508 or crimetips@danvillva.gov.
