BILLINGS - Criminals be forewarned: The Billings Police Department's Street Crime Unit may very well be watching.
The department is now running with full staffing levels, something that was the culprit of the unit being shut down in the late 90s.
Beginning in 2018, a five-personnel Street Crime Unit will fight the quality of life crimes - burglaries, thefts, stolen guns and vehicles - which have seen a sharp uptick over the past few years.
Now having a dedicated unit, police are looking to cut down on these crimes and find those responsible.
"You're going to have officers out there in an undercover capacity conducting investigations and trying to catch individuals in the act or finding out who they are and investigating them for these crimes they may be involved with," said Lt. Neil Lawrence. "We're hoping it will produce some big results for us."
Three patrol officers will be assigned including a detective and detective sergeant, making criminals think twice because the unit could be watching even if they can't see them.
