Mullins group taking stance against crime (Tonya Brown, WPDE)
A group of about 30 people marched down Front and Bay Streets Saturday afternoon in Mullins to take a stand against recent violence in the community.
Pastor Maticia Brunson of Shekinah Glory Outreach Ministries organized the march and community after shootings, home invasions and other crimes in Mullins.
"There is definitely an issue with crime here. And what we want to do today is send a message that event in the midst of crime, God is still in control. We're fighting back. And we're fighting back with prayer. With strength. We're fighting back with a loud voice today to just remind the area that God still reigns," said Brunson.
Brunson said they wanted to walk down areas in the city where there's been a numbers of crimes.
Elder Diane Devine Spencer has an outreach ministry and said it was important that they march down Bay Street.
Mullins Police said a man was found with a gunshot wound last month on Bay Street.
"In my observation, a lot goes on in this area. We're losing sons and daughters. We're losing mothers and fathers in this community. In this state. In this great United States. So many murders," said Spencer.
The group formed a circle and prayed in a parking lot on Front Street.
They prayed for peace throughout the city.
"We are grateful today that we have the bold soldiers of the Lord here to fight back against crime in Mullins," said Brunson.
Brunson asked the marchers to be vigilant and careful in the community.
She added she's addressed her concerns to Mullins Police and the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Brunson said they're continuing to take a stand against crime and plan to hold another event in the coming months.
