State police share FBI wanted flyer for Conn. crime

State police posted a flyer on social media Thursday, depicting a man wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for an incident in Connecticut.

Stefan Alexandru Barabas, 32, a native of Iasi, Romania, has an active federal warrant for his arrest on the charges of attempt to interfere with commerce by extortion, conspiracy to interfere with commerce by extortion and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Barabas is described in the FBI wanted flyer as 6 feet tall, weighing about 280 pounds. It says he has brown eyes and black hair. Possible aliases are “Alex” and “Greu.”

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered by the FBI for information leading to the arrest of Barabas.

In the flyer, the FBI said, Barabas is accused of being involved in a home invasion and attempted extortion.

On April 15, 2007, Barabas and two accomplices — who have since been arrested — entered a residence in South Kent and hid in a closet until house staff left for the day.

Later on, the three emerged with guns and knives, confronting the victim and her friend and tied them up.

“Over the course of the night, Barabas and the other allegedly injected each victim with a supposedly deadly virus and demanded money in exchange for the antidote,” the flyer reads. “After several hours of trying and failing to obtain the money, the victims were forced to drink a sleeping agent.”

They stole a car belonging to the victim and fled the scene.

The flyer said the three were trying to extort $8.5 million from the victim.

On Nov. 15, 2012, the arrest warrant for Barabas was issued.

The FBI said Barabas was known to have left the county in Sept. 2012 with his girlfriend — who they said was not a fugitive. He could be in the U.S. or in Hungary, the FBI said.
