CLEVELAND (AP) — An indictment released Monday indicates that an elderly Ohio couple whose bodies were found in their burned-out car last month had been shot by one of the suspects in the slayings.
Robert Clark, 29, of Dennison, is charged with multiple counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications related to the use of a gun. His co-defendant, Jeffery Stewart, 21, of New Philadelphia, also is charged with aggravated murder but there are no gun or death penalty specifications. The two men are charged in the abduction and slayings of Doyle Chumney, 88, and his wife, Lillian, 79. The couple was reported missing from their home in Strasburg on Jan. 21 after they failed to pick up a son to give him a ride to the airport. Their bodies were found the next day in their charred car on a rural road in Coshocton County, where the two suspects will be prosecuted.
Authorities have said they believe the Chumneys were fatally shot before their car was set on fire.
Coshocton County Prosecutor Jason Given declined to comment about the case on Monday.
Stewart surrendered to police several days after the bodies were found after learning that authorities were looking for a van that Clark was driving. Authorities said at the time that Stewart had implicated himself and Clark, who was arrested Feb. 5 in northern Arizona after leading authorities on a cross-country manhunt. Clark and two companions are suspects in a string of armed robberies in West Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia in the days following the discovery of the Chumneys' bodies. Clark and his two companions were arrested after a chase that ended in the desert near Kingman, Arizona.
Stewart is scheduled to be arraigned in Coshocton County on Wednesday. Clark's arraignment is Friday. Court records did not indicate that either man has an attorney. Stewart is being held on a $2 million bond and Clark on a $5 million bond. Clark has an extensive criminal record.
