U.S. Deputy Marshal Killed Shootout With Fugitive: Officials

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Federal authorities say a deputy U.S. marshal has been killed in a shootout on the outskirts of Baton Rouge during an attempt to arrest a fugitive wanted in two homicides.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells was killed about 11 a.m. Tuesday. That's according to Drew Wade, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service. Wells was 27. Wade says the fugitive was shot and taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

The fugitive was as 31-year-old Jamie D. Croom, who was wanted in the shooting deaths of a brother and sister in New Roads, Louisiana. That's according to Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Beauregard Torres III.

Wade says the last deputy marshal killed in the line of duty in the U.S. was in 2011. He says the FBI is leading the investigation.
