Of the more than 2,440 crimes per 100,000 in population in Anderson County, Palestine and Frankston, larcenies in 2015 made up more than half of all the crimes.

At Wednesday's neighborhood watch meeting, the 2015 uniform crime reporting statistics for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, Palestine Police Department and Frankston Police Department were provided to those attending.

In the first two months of 2017 for the Palestine Police Department, assaults and motor-vehicle thefts appears to have been decreasing.

So far this year, there have been five vehicles stolen. In all of 2016, 44 vehicles were stolen.

So far this year, there have been 6o assaults, and in all of 2016, there were 454 assaults.

Through February, there have been 10 sexual assaults, four robberies, 22 burglaries and 60 larcenies.

Interim Police Chief John Herod explained the difference between a robbery and a burglary. A robbery is when a perpetrator uses a weapon or uses force in the commission of a crime.

In 2015 the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, per 100,000 residents, had seven murders, three robberies, 52 assaults, 174 burglaries, 184 larcenies and 25 auto thefts.

For the Palestine Police Department, using the per 100,000 scale, there were two murders, 25 rapes, 18 robberies, 137 assaults, 131 burglaries, 534 larcenies and 48 auto thefts.

Community Liaison Bernadette Knowles-Capron said many of the lesser crimes are based on crimes of opportunity, where the person committing the offense did not intend to when leaving his residence.

Examples of a crime of opportunity is taking a purse from an unattended shopping cart and shoplifting.

According to the Uniform Crime Reporting statistics, there was not much crime in Frankston, a town of 1,174 people, in 2015.

In 2015 per the 100,000 in population, there were two rapes, one robbery, six assaults, 14 burglaries, 31 larcenies and two auto thefts.

There was also 218 arrests made by the three agencies in 2015. Palestine police made 145 arrests, the sheriff's office arrested 61 individuals, and Frankston apprehended seven people.
