Woman shot on Lafreniere Street
The daylight shooting of a woman in Gentilly and arrests following protests outside Confederate president Jefferson Davis' monument in Mid-City were among the stories making headlines in the New Orleans area during the week that ended Sunday, May 7. Other stories include the arrest of a St. John the Baptist Parish corrections officer accused of leaking confidential investigation information to a private citizen, and a federal decision in the officer-involved shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge. Here are those stories and other news from the week:

A 21-year-old man was wounded in Algiers early Monday morning (May 1) while wrestling with another man over control of a gun, New Orleans police said.
Officers were called about 12:20 a.m. to General De Gaulle and Shirley drives. The victim was approached by a man armed with a handgun, police said in a preliminary report. The victim tried to wrestle with the man over control of the gun, police said, during which time the gun discharged, striking the victim.
The wounded man was taken by private vehicle to an area hospital for treatment. Information about his condition, and about the suspect, was not included in the preliminary NOPD report.

The New Orleans Police Department's false-alarm program officially launched Monday (May 1). The program, formally proposed two years ago, has been repeatedly touted as a means of alleviating strain on NOPD's depleted ranks by reducing thousands of time-consuming service calls through higher fines and the threat of a suspended police response.
The program reduces, from 10 to four, the number of false burglary alarm calls necessary for the department to suspend its response. Violations are issued using a three-tiered structure:
- Written warning for first false alarm
- $75 fine for second false alarm
- $150 fine for third and fourth false alarm: police stop responding after fourth alarm
The false-alarm tally resets each year, and property owners do have the opportunity to appeal penalties. The program requires alarm holders to register their systems with the department. Alarm monitoring companies are required to verify alarms - apart from panic or holdup alarms - before notifying police. Alarm companies can cancel the call to police and not incur a penalty, provided the officer has not arrived at the scene.

The 4-year-old sustained a fractured skull and broken shoulder and the younger child suffered a broken leg and broken shoulder. They were transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans, the police department reported.

An expectant father has been identified by family and authorities as the man killed in a head-on car crash Saturday (April 29) in New Orleans East.
Neylis Ponce Flores, 32, was driving home early that evening to take his younger brother Kevin Ayesca, 20, to his soccer match at City Park, said Cristiane Rosales Fajardo, a community activist and family friend.
The brothers were heading east in the 10800 block of Chef Menteur Highway about 4:50 p.m. when, New Orleans police said, a red Nissan Maxima "veered off the roadway, crossed over the median and entered the eastbound lanes of travel." The Maxima crashed head-on into Ponce's blue Honda Civic, killing Ponce and injuring his brother.
