Captain America co-directors will make an FX crime drama with Noah Hawley - The Verge

Joe and Anthony Russo, the sibling co-directors of Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, will direct a new FX series called The Mastermind, Variety reports.

The Mastermind is reportedly inspired by the true story of Paul Le Roux, a programmer and crime boss who became a DEA informant. The primary source material will be a series of investigative reports published by Atavist Magazine co-founder and CEO Evan Ratliff. Le Roux built encryption software in the 1990s, and in the early 2000s, he moved on to selling prescription drugs over the internet. From there he made the weirdly cinematic choice to branch out into Iranian arms deals, strange agricultural aspirations in Zimbabwe, some level of involvement in the Somali drug trade, and ordering assassinations (which he is currently in prison for).

The series will be executive produced by Noah Hawley, who has made his name at FX as the creator, executive producer, and head writer of the crime anthology series Fargo, as well as executive producer and head writer of the FX / Marvel series Legion.

The Mastermind adds to a long list of projects in the works for Hawley: he’s also working on a miniseries inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle, signed a deal with Universal Pictures to write one of their upcoming Dark Universe movies, is set to make his feature film directorial debut with Fox’s sci-fi Man Alive, and is seemingly still adapting his novel Before the Fallfor a movie from Sony.

The Russo brothers are making a return to TV, where they first made their name on Arrested Development and Community, winning an Emmy for the former. It’ll certainly be a busy few years for the duo, as they’re currently in post-production for Avengers: Infinity War and will also be directing its untitled 2019 sequel.
