The Laredo Police Department released its annual safety report last week, and new data reveals some interesting trends regarding crime in the Gateway City.
Along with a population census and a message from ex-LPD chief Ray Garner, the report shows a detailed look at different types of crimes from 2009 to 2016., including what types of crimes were the most prevalent last year and which misdeeds are on the rise.
Click through the gallery above to get a comprehensive look at which types of crimes are on the rise and on the decline in Laredo, according to LPD's annual report.
Aggravated sexual assault was the top crime category in terms of growth, up 11 percent since 2015 and a startling 92 percent since 2009, according to the report. It was the only classification of crime that's experienced growth during that eight-year span.
When questioned about the steep rise on social media, LPD gave some reasoning behind the increase.
"There is more of a proactive education about bringing these cases forward," LPD stated in a Facebook comment. "It's not that it wasn't happening before. It just wasn't reported. Needed to get these victims living in fear of stigmas and judgement out of the shadows."

Motor-vehicle theft, on the other hand, has experienced the sharpest decline, according to the report. That classification of crime is down 26 percent since 2015 and a whopping 84 percent since 2009.
