Make-A-Wish helps Falmouth boy, 10, fight crime as Sonic Spiderboy - Bangor Daily News

Sawyer wanted to be the hero and save the day. And with a little help from a lot of new friends, he did.

Sawyer, a 10-year-old from Falmouth, donned his Sonic Spiderboy costume Sunday morning, became a police officer, rode on the town’s fire boat, tracked an evil mime to Portland saved Portland Sea Dog mascot Slugger just in time for Sunday’s game.

Not a bad way to spend more than three hours.

Make-A-Wish Maine officials said it took a couple of months to put this wish together. Sawyer suffers from a seizure disorder, but it did not stop him on this day.

Falmouth police Chief Edward Tolan made Sawyer a special assistant to his department before a trip on the Falmouth fire boat over to Portland.

Sawyer’s adventure included saving hostages at the Amtrak station and making a stylish pose in the process, searching a warehouse with the help of Portland police and eventually tracking down Slugger and saving him from the evil mime.

His reward? A special trip in a special Portland police vehicle to Hadlock Field with his new friend Slugger and a bunch of other new friends who helped make his special day come to life.

Officials with Make-A-Wish Maine said without the help of the Greater Portland community it would have been impossible to help Sonic Spiderboy make his debut as a crime fighter and a successful one at that.
