Nearly $400K awarded to county agencies to help victims, fight crime - Herald-Mail Media

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan's office recently announced nearly $400,000 worth of grants that will be used to help several local agencies combat crime and support victims across Washington County.

The big winners in the grant allotments were the Hagerstown Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Office and Citizens Assisting Sheltering the Abused, or CASA.

The following received funding from the governor's office:

Hagerstown Police Department

• Safe Streets, $159,624

The program provides funds that play a vital role in providing support to law-enforcement agencies across the state.

The initiative is an offender-based model that was established to dramatically reduce crime by instituting information sharing among all levels of government. It focuses all criminal-justice resources on a core group of violent offenders who commit the majority of local offenses.

• Gun Violence Reduction Grant, $60,000

The grants support programs that target criminals and juveniles who use or illegally possess firearms.

The grant also funds law-enforcement and prosecution programs that support firearms reduction, covert investigations and debriefing of arrestees and offenders for information related to illegal-firearms trafficking

More than $900,000 in grants will be distributed to 21 agencies statewide

• Domestic Violence Unit Pilot Program, $10,992

The program offers law enforcement the resources to meet District and Circuit Court guidelines for the efficient and timely service of protective orders.

More than $196,000 in state grants will be distributed to 12 law-enforcement agencies.

Washington County Sheriff's Office

• Sex Offender Compliance and Enforcement Awards, $29,152

The program provides support to 24 law-enforcement agencies in the state with specialized units that primarily handle the sex-offender registry within their jurisdictions.

The funds will assist law-enforcement agencies in their duties of sex-offender registration, compliance verification and enforcement against violent sex offenders.

• Domestic Violence Grant Program, $126,919

The program provides crisis and support services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

Services include a 24-hour hot line, safe accommodations, crisis counseling, legal services and specialized services for children.

About $3.4 million in federal and state grants will be distributed to the 19 comprehensive domestic-violence-services providers that serve all 24 jurisdictions in Maryland.

• Maryland Victims of Crime Fund, $10,000

The fund was created by the Maryland General Assembly during the 1991 legislative session.

The legislation created a source of revenue for programs across the state to serve crime victims. The primary purpose of the fund is to benefit the victims and witnesses of crime.

A total of $600,000 in grants will be distributed to 33 agencies statewide.

• Legal Services for Crime Victims Fund, $5,000

The fund ensures that money obtained from unclaimed restitution is used for annual grants to provide legal counsel to victims of crime and delinquent acts to protect their rights as provided by law.

A total of $75,000 in grants will be distributed for legal services for crime victims.
