Carter Lake police officer taken to hospital after hotel search - The Daily Nonpareil

CARTER LAKE — A Carter Lake police officer was taken to an area hospital as a precaution after he handled drugs found in a hotel room during an investigation Monday morning.

The officer was called to the Super 8 in Carter Lake just before 11 a.m. after hotel cleaning staff found drugs in a room, Carter Lake Police Chief Shawn Kannedy said. The officer secured the drugs — believed to be methamphetamine — and placed them into evidence at the police station.

Kannedy said the officer felt light-headed and dizzy and was taken to CHI Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs as a precaution. The police chief said exposure to the drugs did not cause the dizzy spell.

“Better safe than sorry,” Kannedy said.

Before authorities had determined what drug was found and if the exposure was a factor, the Omaha Police hazardous materials team and area narcotics task force were called in. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker noted the first floor of the hotel was locked down briefly during the investigation.

Kannedy said the officer was treated briefly at the hospital and was set to be released in the early afternoon.
