Topic of crime sure to come up at Prospect Hill forum Saturday - mySanAntonio.com

The Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association is hosting a District 5 City Council candidate forum Saturday that will focus in part on increasing crime problems in the near West Side area.

The forum is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Advocates Boxing Gymnasium, 1600 Buena Vista.

After an increase in crime, including several homicides and armed robberies, some Prospect Hill residents are circulating a petition calling on the San Antonio Police Department and city leaders to place a police storefront substation on North Zarzamora Street. That area in particular is plagued by crime, they say.

“I don’t feel safe anymore,” said Delores Sotomayor, until recently the interim president of the Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association. “We can’t let our kids outside. It’s not safe.”

So far, the residents have collected roughly 350 signatures. They also started a Change.org petition that has a few signatures.

Sgt. Jesse Salame, a police spokesman, said the department is aware of neighborhood crime concerns in the area.

“We’re looking at feasibility and whether it will be viable in that area, whether it will be an effective model of policing,” Salame said. “We’re looking to put more officers on the street, not necessarily asking residents to come to a storefront.”
