New Iberia residents say crime is the worst they've seen after another fatal shooting - KATC Lafayette News

Iberia Parish Sheriff's deputies say they answered a call around 2:30 Sunday morning where a 24-year-old man was shot multiple times on the 600 block of field street.

He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The parish sheriff's office says there are no suspects and they are not sure what was happening when the man was killed walking by himself.

But after another young life was taken from gun violence, residents are on high alert.

"Well I kind of felt bad in a way because its someone's child that someone took the life from. And I thought of myself being here at my home living by myself that this area is a dangerous place now to live in," said Oneal Davis who lives down the street.

He retired in 2007 after working with the New Iberia police and Iberia Parish Sheriff's office after more than 20 years.

"It wasn't as bad as it is now, we never had the street problems they have now with the young kids," said Davis

He says while he sees the deputies on the streets trying to control crime, more needs to be done by members of the community in order to take charge of their neighborhoods and keep them safe.

"We have patrol, we have patrol men pass. I see them pass daytime, night time and sometime early in the morning but it's just out of control with gun weapons now in New Iberia," he said.

Almost two years ago, there was another fatal shooting right down the same street.

"When you having killings behind killings, whatever causes it, it's just a tragedy here in this community," Davis said.

It's that violence that makes Davis feel unsafe. He even drives to his job down the street instead of walking a few steps.

"I prefer driving that truck right there to the cab stand rather than walking because I fear my life," he said. "I mean it's a serious problem here in New Iberia, I never thought New Iberia would get to where it is now."

Some residents said they heard the gunshots then a truck flee the scene. One woman heard the shots and just went to bed thanking God that she was already safe inside.
