For the Rev. Brett Gabriel Sr., the annual National Night Out Against Crime is about fellowship between residents, improving relationships with law enforcement and raising awareness of problems in neighborhoods.
"We really put forth the message that we believe in the Bible," he said. "If we put those principles first, those relationships can be established with law enforcement and our neighbors, and we can prevent a lot of what we see happening."
Gabriel, of Greater New Foundation Baptist Church in Lockport, said church members are trying to establish a Neighborhood Watch in the area.
Block parties for Night Out will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at locations throughout Lafourche Parish. Parties will include food and activities for children and adults.
A parade will take place in Raceland, beginning at the fire station near the U.S. 90 overpass and continuing throughout the Sugarland subdivision.
Explorers from POST 323 will visit locations to offer free child fingerprinting and DNA swabbing.
Thibodaux Family Church Pastor Duane Bland said this will be the church's second year hosting a Night Out party. Last year's event drew about 150 people despite bad weather the night before, he said.
"It gives us the opportunity to recognize our police officers and be grateful for their service to us," he said. "Scripture gives us the instruction that we are to pray for those in authority. ... Secondly, it's the community atmosphere. We all want a safe community, and it takes the local police and the community coming together."
Lafourche sheriff's Lt. Brennan Matherne said Night Out allows residents to thank deputies for their service and deputies to thank residents for their support.
"A lot of times, law enforcement interacts with people on the worst day of their life," he said. "This affords us the opportunity to interact with people in a neutral, even joyous, time. We just encourage people to come out and talk with us."
Thibodaux and Terrebonne Parish will hold events in October.
