Police release 2016-2017 crime statistics for downtown Greenville - WYFF Greenville

Greenville police have released the crime statistics for the downtown Central Business District comparing 2016 to the current year.

Most crimes showed little change in frequency, though a few increased while others decreased. The statistics were gathered from Jan. 1 to July 24, 2016, and Jan. 1 to July 24, 2017.

Police said they released the statistics in response to requests from the media after a recent stabbing on Main Street. (For more on that story, click here. Raw video from the scene is above on this page.)

In alcohol-related offenses, liquor law violations dropped from 30 in 2016 to 10. Arrested for drunkenness increased slightly, from 57 to 60, while driving under the influence arrests stayed nearly the same, with 11 in 2016 and 12 this year.

Violent and sexual crimes stayed the same or decreased, with two rapes reported in both years. There was one report of sodomy in 2016 and none this year. There was one report of fondling in both years.

There were seven aggravated assaults in both years and 32 simple assaults in 2016 and 30 this year. Robberies in downtown have decreased this year, with four reported in 2016 and only one this year.

In 2016, there was one homicide that was ruled justified and none this year. In 2017, there was a kidnapping reported, and none the year before.

Two crimes that saw a major increase in the downtown were shoplifting and pickpocketing or purse snatching. There were 16 cases of shoplifting in 2016 and 53 so far this year. There were no cases of pickpocketing or purse snatching in 2016, but there have been three cases reported this year.

Other types of theft stayed nearly the same: theft from a building happened 41 times in 2016 and 42 times this year, thefts from vehicles happened 16 times in 2016 and 17 times this year and vehicles were stolen downtown 16 times in 2016 and 17 times this year. Burglaries are another crime category that saw an increase, with four reported in 2016 and nine in 2017. Other types of theft not specified went down from 35 cases to 20 this year.

Credit card or ATM fraud went from six cases in 2016 down to three cases this year.

There have been six arrests for weapons violations this year, double the number in 2016.

The number of trespassing complaint increased from 60 in 2016 to 78 this year, but there was a major reduction in the incidents of malicious damage and vandalism, with 48 incidents reported in 2016 and only 24 so far this year.
