The western Pennsylvania teacher gunned down in a hail of 10 bullets outside her mother's home Sunday likely knew her killer and her death was a "crime of passion."
These are the early conclusions of investigators in Aliquippa, Beaver County, Pa., where several layers of law enforcement are probing Sunday night's shooting death of suspended cyber teacher Rachael DelTondo, age 33.
KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh is reporting Beaver County District Attorney David Lozier as saying investigators now believe DelTondo knew her assailant, and that the evidence will show her murder was "a crime of passion."
However, Lozier won't say if police have a suspect. But it is not for a lack of looking:
"We could not be taking this more seriously. We had a young woman, 33-years-old, shot to death on the driveway of her mother's house on Mother's Day evening," Lozier told KDKA.
"We are working with every resource we have. We're getting video cameras, we are downloading information, we are interviewing witnesses. We are doing everything we can."
As WTAE-TV reports, DelTondo was suspended in November from the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, after the anonymous leak of an Aliquippa police report from 2016 that said she had been found in a parked car with a 17-year-old former male student. No charges were ever filed.
KDKA cites sources saying the alleged police leak about DelTondo also prompted a Pa. state police investigation of the Aliquippa Police, with DelTondo cooperating.
"It's shameful that this woman was painted with a police report that had been written that did not result in criminal charges," Lozier told WTAE. "There was a personal vendetta against her at the time."
Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School CEO Brian Hayden released the following statement, as reported by WTAE:
"We were saddened to learn of the tragic death of Rachel DelTondo, apparently the result of a violent incident in the city of Aliquippa. We have no additional information beyond what is being reported by local media. We express our sympathy to her family and coworkers and will support them in any way possible in the weeks and months ahead as they mourn her passing."
DelTondo was gunned down after returning home late Sunday night from an ice cream shop. The hail of as many as 10 bullets erupted as Rachael DelTondo stepped onto the driveway of her mother's Buchanan Street home.
She died in the driveway.
